Maintenance and Sealer Selection Guide

Aqua-Thane G40 vs. Aqua-Thane M35 - The G40 has a high gloss finish and will darken or "wet out" the concrete very similar to when water is applied to an unsealed surface. The M35 has a matte/ satin finish with very slight darkening on colored concrete.

How to Apply Z Aqua-Thane

Instructions

Surface Prep: New concrete must be completely cured before applying this sealer. Any moisture remaining in the concrete can cause adhesion issues. A minimum of 10 days after the concrete has been poured, you can check the concrete with either a concrete moisture meter or by taking several 18x18 inch sheets of clear plastic and thoroughly taping it to the surface completely around the edges. If after 24 hrs the plastic and concrete are dry, it is assumed there are not hydrostatic pressure problems. If acid stains or washes are used, the concrete must be completely neutralized back to a pH of 7. On all new hard troweled concrete a light sanding with 100-200 grit sand paper is recommended to open the surface and promote adhesion. On burnished, highly polished or concrete cast against smooth surfaces, additional sanding or acid etching may be required for the best adhesion properties. On textured or stamped concrete, no additional steps are required but in all cases concrete should be clean and 100% free of all dust, debris, or previous coatings.

Mixing: Mix exactly 2 parts of A to 1 part of B. Mix thoroughly with a paint mixing stick and always scrape the sides of your mixing container to ensure a uniform mixture. Mix adequately for 2-3 minutes. Failure to properly mix components may result in adhesion or hardness issues. Pot life of mixed components is roughly 2-3 hours at 75ºF.

Application: Concrete surface should be between 55ºF and 85ºF. In smaller areas such as countertops, a 1/4” nap roller or a micro-fiber applicator pad is recommended. Product should be applied in a thin even coating. Do not allow to puddle in low areas. Back rolling may be necessary to control thickness and guarantee a uniform coating. Two coats should be applied for sufficient protection. On rough or more porous concrete additional coats may be needed. Always test with water to confirm concrete is adequately sealed. Recoat time is between 6-12 hours at 75ºF and the first coat should be tack free. If this window is missed, the first coat may have to be lightly sanded with 300 grit paper before applying a second coat.

**Avoid sticking tape to sealed concrete. Chemical bonds can form between glue and sealer which can be strong enough to pull off sealer and stain. If this happens, these areas can normally be sanded and spot fixed**

Easy application and looks great

"It’s been about 3 weeks since applied to kitchen countertops. This was easier than I anticipated to apply and I have been pleased with the results."

ANDY H. (5/5)

Beautiful Finish

"I decided to sand down my countertop and use this product. It was a fairly easy job and the results are great. See the before and after pictures. Now I get to see how well it stands up to the weather and wear in Port Aransas, TX. Great customer service also."

David S. (5/5)

This product worked great and

"This product worked great and put a nice finish on"

Gregory O. (5/5)

Works, but not quite the finish I was hoping for

"I applied 2 coats of G40 to a slab I made for and outdoor grill table to make it food safe, but also to resist the outdoor elements. After measuring and mixing the components I realized the finish was much more viscous than I would have assumed, making it difficult to apply what I would call a “thin” coat. Even after the first coat I could tell it was going to build more than I would have liked giving the slab the illusion of being covered in plastic. I may sand and reapply in the future to see it I can get a thinner coat because after the first rain storm It clearly still absorbing water through pinholes despite plenty of even coverage."

Very Smooth

"It went on great, although I highly recommend the applicator pads vs. a roller. You just cannot get the same smoothness with a roller."

Paul D. (5/5)

Outdoor kitchen countertop

"I built an outdoor kitchen with a bar. I used the products from counter top solutions to put a concrete countertop on it and it came out excellent! The videos and tips are very informative. I sealed the countertop with their two part epoxy and couldn’t be happier!"

Q&A

Can this be used on concrete floors?
Yes, this sealer can be used used on floors or even outdoor patios but the countertop size containers we sell it in would make it a little tough. Call us and we may be able to help you with larger qtys.
I applied this to my countertops about 2 years ago. I would like to redo it. Should I scuff the surface before I reapply? I also left some lines from the applicator pads. Would a roller be a better option? Thanks!
Yes, a light scuff with some 100-200 grit sand paper and then you can reapply in the same way you applied the first time.
What is a recommended cleaning solution for day to day use, after application?
Any surface cleaner with cloth, paper towel or sponge would be fine to use. The only thing you want to avoid is anything abrasive like a scotch brit for magic eraser.
Any tips to ensure that roller lines and stipple aren’t as visible after using foam roller?
Make sure you are rolling on super thin and back rolling in the other direction to stretch out the sealer and help it lay flat. If you are still having trouble, you can add about 5% water to help thin it a bit more.
Can I use the G40 on my concrete countertops then apply a few layers of Aqua-poxy? Are they compatible?
Yes, you can apply the Aqua-Poxy over the G40 or vice versa but you would want to lightly scuff the surface of the G40 first to promote adhesion.
I applied two coats of G35 and one coat of G40 over it for the gloss finish. I used a small nap roller to apply. Even though I cleaned the roller before I applied the sealer, it seems I still got some fibers in the finish. Any recommendations on how to smooth it out? Wet sand with fine grit sandpaper?
I would sand with some 220 grit paper to remove those nap fibers. Then apply one more coat of the G40. You might be better off using a foam roller this time to prevent that.
How long is the full cure time after sealer is applied? Is it recommended to wait 24hrs or so to use as normal?
This sealer will be hard enough for light use within 24 hours. It will continue to cure for 3-5 days.
When you use the concrete sealer on a countertop, does it make the surface heat resistant? Like for setting pots and pans on it?
In most cases, sealers are less heat resistant than the concrete itself. How heat resistant will depend on the sealer. The Aqua-Thane line is good up to about 400 degrees F. However, we never recommend setting a very hot pot or pan (directly from a stove top) on really any countertop surface.
Can you apply two coats of G40 and then two coats of M35 for a better seal? Would the M35 take the gloss away after the two G40 coats?
Yes, you can apply the M35 over the G40 to remove the gloss. You will get the color enhancing affect of the G40 however since that will be applied first. Make sure you are applying these coats very thin and back rolling thoroughly.
How long after applying aqua stain UV should we wait to apply the sealer?
This depends on environmental conditions and how heavy you apply stain but I would wait about 5 hours and make sure everything is really dry. Then wipe the top down with a damp rag to remove any excess stain residue that did not penetrate into the concrete. Once the top is dry from that, you can start to apply sealer.
