Z Aqua-Thane M35 is a water-borne, two-component, self cross linking polyurethane coating. It exhibits a satin finish and offers superior stain, abrasion and chemical resistance. Aqua-Thane G40 vs. Aqua-Thane M35 - The G40 has a high gloss finish and will darken or "wet out" the concrete very similar to when water is applied to an unsealed surface. The M35 has a matte/ satin finish with very slight darkening on colored concrete.
Note: If a darkening effect with a satin finish is desired, one coat of the G40 can be used first to darken the concrete followed by 1-2 coats of the M35 to create the satin finish. They can also be used in reverse to create a gloss finish without any darkening. For this, start with at least 2 coats of the M35 (then test with water to make sure it is well sealed and no G40 will get through to the concrete), then apply 1 coat of the G40 to add a gloss layer.
How to Apply Z Aqua-Thane
Instructions
Surface Prep: New concrete must be completely cured before applying this sealer. Any moisture remaining in the concrete can cause adhesion issues. A minimum of 10 days after the concrete has been poured, you can check the concrete with either a concrete moisture meter or by taking several 18x18 inch sheets of clear plastic and thoroughly taping it to the surface completely around the edges. If after 24 hrs the plastic and concrete are dry, it is assumed there are not hydrostatic pressure problems. If acid stains or washes are used, the concrete must be completely neutralized back to a pH of 7. On all new hard troweled concrete a light sanding with 100-200 grit sand paper is recommended to open the surface and promote adhesion. On burnished, highly polished or concrete cast against smooth surfaces, additional sanding or acid etching may be required for the best adhesion properties. On textured or stamped concrete, no additional steps are required but in all cases concrete should be clean and 100% free of all dust, debris, or previous coatings.
Mixing: Mix exactly 4 parts of A to 1 part of B. Mix thoroughly with a paint mixing stick and always scrape the sides of your mixing container to ensure a uniform mixture. Mix adequately for 2-3 minutes. Failure to properly mix components may result in adhesion or hardness issues. Pot life of mixed components is roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour at 75ºF.
Application: Concrete surface should be between 55ºF and 85ºF. In smaller areas such as countertops, a 1/4” nap roller or a micro-fiber applicator pad is recommended. Product should be applied in a thin even coating. Do not allow to puddle in low areas. Back rolling may be necessary to control thickness and guarantee a uniform coating. Two coats should be applied for sufficient protection. On rough or more porous concrete additional coats may be needed. Always test with water to confirm concrete is adequately sealed. Recoat time is between 4-8 hours at 75ºF and the first coat should be tack free. If this window is missed, the first coat may have to be lightly sanded with 300 grit paper before applying a second coat.
**Avoid sticking tape to sealed concrete. Chemical bonds can form between glue and sealer which can be strong enough to pull off sealer and stain. If this happens, these areas can normally be sanded and spot fixed**

"This product is very easy to use! We built a plywood/Durock coffee table with a skim coat of Feather finish coating 2 years ago with another 1 part clear coat- didn't work. After re-doing the feather finish, we used the M35 2 part. Already this is so much better that the old surface. The color is much richer and appears sealed this time. Can't wait to see the results after time. . . Anyway, this couldn't be easier to apply. We used a roller which didn't initially look great, but smoothed out and now looks Awesome. Do not use this sealer, nothing like promised.
"Used this to seal white concrete countertops from concrete countertop solutions. It is porous, and stains incredibly easily. anything with color, like any sort of food with colorful spice, tomatoe sauce, or now the bottom of a pan have all left stains, and in the bathroom some cough syrup spilled and also stained the countertop purple. Its permanent, cant get it out, as the color absorbs into the sealer. it also cracks off if any hot oil splatters out of the pan, and so after only one year of living in the space there are blemishes all over our countertops. I understand you have to treat things gently but its also a kitchen and things need to be able to spill and be wiped up without permanently staining a brand new white countertop. I am now faced with sanding off the entire kitchen and bathroom, which will probably spread toxic urethane dust all over my house, and resealing them all with something else. Desperately wish I had never used this sealer, cant warn you away strongly enough."

"Aqua-Thane M35 failed a few months after application on my outdoor concrete countertop. The Aqua-Thane bubbled up and failed to adhere to the concrete in several places. I emailed Concrete Countertop Solutions, and their solution said I should use SiAcryl 14 after stripping the Aqua-Thane. Really? Why do you advertise this product is for outdoor use?"

"This product was very easy to apply, but flakes of about as easily once dry. I have had my counters sealed for about 3 months and have to be extremely careful when setting any thing on them. I have numerous chips. I reached out to customer service but was told that I probably put the product on wrong."

"We noticed that the seal around the stove range gets affected by temperature. When cooking we typically have hot oil splashes and apparently the seal is not made for it, so we had to sand and re-seal and cover sealed areas with cutting boards."
Q&A
- Can you recommend any products to color or stain the concrete before applying M35? My concrete is new and cured.
- Check out both our Aqua-Stain UV and our Aqua-Tint dye. These are both liquids that can be applied to new concrete but must be done before sealing.
- If I apply the g40 and have a glossy look can I reseal in a few years with the g35 and have a matte satin look later on?
- Yes, you can cover with M35 to reduce some of the gloss.
- I have some left over M35 from a project about 5 years ago. What is the shelf life for M35 once the container has been opened?
- The shelf life is only about 1 year. I would not use this product if it is 5 years old. You can always do a small scale test but chances are the resin has settled in part A and it will not get as hard.
- I want to completely strip my Z Aqua-Thane M35 as it is chipping in spots and redo my entire kitchen in epoxy. What product or steps are recommended for getting my countertops to a point I can attempt a faux marble epoxy look?
- There are a couple ways to strip this but usually people will choose the mechanical route. We have some good abrasives for stripping polyurethane. P{lease email us at info@concretecountertopsolutions.com and we can walk you through the entire process.
- It’s been about 2 years since I applied the Z Aqua-Thane M35. How often should I recoat?
- This really depends on the amount of use/ wear the countertop endures. If you are noticing any areas that are heavily warn or not protecting as well as they once did, this would be a good indication. To be overly cautious, it would not be a bad idea to reapply every 2-5 years. Make sure you sand the existing sealer lightly with some 220 grit paper. Then you will reapply another very thin even coat.
- I used the m35 on my countertops i did using your forms and additives and am very happy with the results. I have a lot left and am finally finishing the rest of the kitchen and was wondering if you’ve had anybody use this on backsplash with gout? Would it work for that the tile is a stone tile?
- I am very glad to hear everything worked well for you. The short answer top your question is, it may. It will really depend on the porosity of the stone. I would say give it a test though on a scrap piece and see. Alternatively, if you need something just to seal the stone and grout, the SiAcryl 14 should work well.
- Can I use M35 over your Ultra Z Poxy?
- Yes, polyurethane like the M35 is often used as a matte top coat to the Ultra Z Poxy.
- I am concerned with how well the countertops are sealed. Can I apply 3-4 coats if desired? Wondering if it will affect the appearance or if that is too many.
- Yes, you can certainly apply 3-4 coats if the seal does not seem adequate at 2 coats. Just make Sure you are applying them very thin and not trying to build up the sealer to thick.
- Can this sealer be applied over another brand of stain/paint?
- Yes, it should be fine over other stains. The only think I would be cautious about is concrete paint (and some stains that are more like paint) are notorious for failing. If the paint or stain does fail, the sealer will come right off with it.
- I wet sanded using 400 grit. Is this to smooth for aqua thane 35 to appropriately penetrate? Also, if countertops have rough areas will aqua thane 35 fill in and create a smooth finish?
- 400 grit with regular wet sand paper is probably ok. 400 grit with diamond polishing pads may be too smooth. I would not advise going past 200 grit. The Aqua-Thane M35 is a very thin film so it will not really fill any low or rough spots. For that, the Aqua-Poxy would probably be better as it can be built up a little thicker.
